As you know, Social Security is an intergenerational program that benefits women and men - young and old - with disability, survivor and retirement benefits. While it is important to ensure that Social Security stays intact for current beneficiaries, it is also important to protect future beneficiaries from the effects of a privatized program.

I wanted to share with you some facts about Social Security and privatization. Women are the majority of Social Security beneficiaries and rely more heavily on the benefit for retirement income. But, I wanted to make sure you knew many young women depend on Social Security too. The disability and survivor benefits Social Security provides to families when a wage earner dies or becomes disabled is irreplaceable. Private accounts proposed by the current administration would cut the benefits that keep older women out of poverty and independent in retirement. The plan that they propose could cut your Social Security benefit at retirement by up to 50 percent. You would have to rely on the risks of the stock market to make up the difference. Private accounts also significantly reduce the disability and survivor benefits that protect children, widows and people with disabilities. I am also concerned that this proposal requires deepening the national debt by $2 trillion dollars to finance private accounts. That's a burden I don't want you to inherit. As a woman at or near retirement, I am fighting to ensure that this family safety net that we all earn is there for generations of women to come.
